Film-maker

Born: 25 August, 1919
Died: 19 January, 2002

In 1934, whilst still at school Riddell -Black became a member of the Meteor Society, an amateur film production society. On leaving school he wanted to be involved in making films and attended Stow College of Engineering to study cinema engineering. He was called up in September 1939, spending most of the war in India working in the Army Film Operation Unit.

After the war he worked as a production assistant with Elder-Dalrymple Productions. In 1949, with Bill Russell and David Low, he established Templar Films. The young company secured contracts from Gaumont-British News, NBC and the BBC Scotland Television Newsreel.

Commissions from Films of Scotland and various industrial clients formed the staple of Templar’s output and included the Oscar winning Seawards the Great Ships (1960). In 1970 Templar produced the official film of the Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh. The company was wound down on Riddell-Black’s effective retirement in the mid 1970’s.
