Biography of 'Elder Dalrymple Productions / Elder Films'
Production company
The Elder Dalrymple partnership was formed around 1936 by Jack C Elder and J Blake Dalrymple, trading under the name Carrick Classroom Films and based the in Carrick Studios, Ayr. Pioneers in the production of educational films they shot in Scotland and in overseas locations with their work distributed through London-based distributor, Educational and General Services (EGS). Elder, a teacher, was a propagandist for the importance of film as an educational tool. Dalrymple was an accomplished photographer and filmmaker.
Between 1935 and 1939 the company were commissioned by the Glasgow Corporation Education Committee to produce short classroom films of Scottish subjects. In 1936, with the purpose of geography teaching in mind, Jack Elder set off on board the yacht Rosalind on a preliminary tour of the Scottish coasts with intentions of venturing further to the Mediterranean. The voyage was interrupted due to the Spanish Civil War. In October 1937 Dalrymple and James Stirling Gillespie undertook an expedition from Cape Town to Cairo to make films for the Glasgow Education Committee. They produced a series of short educational films on the geography of the African continent, village life, native crafts and on the animal population. In 1939 one of series of Scottish agricultural films Spring in the Fields was chosen to represent Britain in the National Film Festival in Rome. Dalrymple was able to finance overseas filming expeditions, and another was planned for August 1939. Dalrymple and Gillespie were this time to sail in Rosalind from Southampton to Portugal; their trip was cut short in September 1939 when Britain declared war on Germany.
Both men completed their military service and after the war re-formed the company under the name Elder Film Productions, based at 231 St Vincent Street, Glasgow. Two films were produced Paddy’s Milestone (1947) and Perchance to Sail (1947). The partnership was short lived. By 1951 Elder had started working on his own under the name Elder Films based at 118 Blythswood St, Glasgow. Dalrymple emigrated to Rhodesia in the early 1950s. Elder, with his wife Isabel, continued in production of educational, documentary and industrial films, moving to studio premises in Saracens Head Lane, Glasgow and advertising as Studio-One-Scotland until around 1957.
